The legendary chocolate chip cookie - everyones favourite.

Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was actually created by accident? Yes, you read right, this classic dessert wasn’t even created intentionally. Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts added broken chocolate bar pieces to a cookie dough thinking that they would melt, instead the chocolate chip cookie was born.

Now I know everyone has their own way of making chocolate chip cookies, but what is your favourite? Do you like the classic chocolate chip cookie or maybe the chewy chocolate chip cookie? We all have our preferences. I personally like it the classic way, not too sweet, crunchy and melt in your mouth delicious.

Did you know the chocolate chip cookie was originally named the “Butterdrop Do Cookie“ and the very first one was the size of a quarter?

The creator of the chocolate chip cookie was paid for her recipe with a lifetime supply of chocolate from Nestlé, now wouldn’t that be great? Imagine inventing something so amazing and being paid in chocolate..

Another fun fact is that the worlds largest chocolate chip cookie weighed 38 000 pounds, had a diameter of 102 feet and contained 30 000 eggs, I wonder how long it took them to finish the whole thing.

So how do you eat your chocolate chip cookie? With milk? Honey? Or plain, as it is? Its an infamous tradition in the middle east to eat your chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce. I really hope they give you a shot of insullin with it because that screams diabetes.

“If you can’t change the world with chocolate chip cookies, how can you change the world?“ - Pat Murphy

Here are some must know tips and tricks for baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie;

  • Add powdered milk for an extra-chewy cookie.

Chef Christina Tosi swears by this, simply add two tablespoons of milk powder to your favourite chocolate chip cookie recipe and let your tastebuds dance of joy.

  • Use cold butter to help your cookies bake evenly throughout.

A cold butter is going to give you a different texture and helps keep the temperature even.

  • For a firmer cookie, let the dough chill for 24 hours

This trick allows the dry ingredients to fully soak up the wet ingredients, resulting in a drier firmer dough.

  • If you like them thin and crispy use more white sugar.

By adding more white sugar than brown these cookies end up spreading instead of rising as white sugar has less leavening power than brown, resulting in a thinner, crispier treat.

  • Use more brown sugar for that rich caramel taste

Brown sugar will give the cookie a more cake like texture and add a richer more intense flavour

  • Sprinkle cookies with salt for a more complex flavour

Salt brings out the flavour of your cookies as it helps you to better taste the intense sweetness of sugar.

We can all agree that chocolate chip cookies has a lot of history and tricks to them, but they’ll always stay a delicious treat anyone, even the pickiest eater can enjoy.
